42-Not Just For ATVs – Jericho Mountain SP

Jericho Lake

Not being an ATV rider, I was reluctant to visit this park.  It’s the state’s newest park and it’s the only one promoted to be ATV friendly.  So I put off visiting until late on a November afternoon and once again had the park virtually to myself.

As I understand it, the park was acquired by taking over a Berlin city-owned preserve, working out well for both the state and the city, as Berlin has been going through some tough times.  The plan is that it will bring in some much-needed tourism dollars. It’s still a park very much under development.  A group of small cabins and camping sites had just been developed earlier this year and a large facility (store? lodge?) is still under construction.  Parking at Jericho Lake, I chose to take a quick loop hike around the lake, following the ATV trails.

Pipeline Trail

From previous experience with heavily used ATV routes, I was expecting the trails to show more wear and tear, and was pleased to see that was not the case.  It’s definitely more a backwoods experience than a wilderness experience though.

In late November you have to look hard for color, even down to these pink lichens.

Because much of the area had been recently logged, the views in many directions were wonderful.  I was told by a cheerful park employee that some of the longer trails lead to some spectacular views.  There’s an inviting beach and picnic area just waiting for visitors.  I’d bet this could be really enjoyable for cross-country skiers, although maybe not on a busy snowmobile weekend.Happy travels!
