Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge

At the right time of year, Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge is considered a bird watcher’s paradise.  Although June is not one of those times, it was still well worth the short hike.DSC03578Following an old railroad grade, the trail from Airport Road couldn’t have been any easier.  After about a mile and a half you come to Cherry Pond.DSC03574 DSC03580The views from the edge of the pond are stunning, with the Presidential Range in the distance.  Even when the mountaintops are clouded, the weather here is often sunny.  But this is a wildlife refuge isn’t it?DSC03575-1There is a nice viewing platform on Cherry Pond and although the birds were scarce at this time of day, this turtle couldn’t resist the noontime sun.  A pleasant hike through the woods leads to Little Cherry Pond and another viewing platform.DSC03587All in all, this is a great place to spend an hour or two.  Kid-friendly but not crowded in the least, chances are you will have the place to yourself, as we did.DSC03573Happy travels!
